Takeoka Laboratory | QIC
Our research and our lab
At Takeoka Lab, we study quantum information, a field that brings together quantum mechanics and information processing.
Our work ranges from developing quantum information technologies for cryptography, communication, and computing to exploring the principles behind them. We conduct theoretical research and work with collaborators on proof-of-principle experiments.
Quantum information science
Quantum information science uses principles and phenomena specific to quantum mechanics in information science and technology. It aims to achieve performance and capabilities that conventional technologies have struggled to provide.
Quantum communication
We explore the principles and technologies for transmitting information securely and at high speed, and for connecting quantum systems.
Quantum computing
Learn how quantum information is processed and put to use in society, through applications such as computing and machine learning with quantum systems.

Quantum Communication Theory
Quantum communication studies how the properties of quantum mechanics can be used to transmit information securely and connect quantum systems in different locations. The theory team uses quantum information theory to model communication schemes and networks mathematically, examining their security, communication rates, and performance in the presence of loss and noise.
Quantum Communication Experiment
The Quantum Communication Experiment team studies technologies for generating, transmitting, and measuring quantum information with photons. Quantum networks require us to generate entanglement, transmit it reliably through optical fiber, and make photons from different locations interfere precisely before detecting them.
Distributed Quantum Computation
One approach to scaling up quantum computing is distributed quantum computation, in which several quantum computers or modules are connected and work together. This requires methods for exchanging quantum information between separated quantum systems and ways to combine devices with limited capabilities.
Quantum Machine Learning
We study how quantum computers can be used for machine learning and optimization. Our work includes designing algorithms for data classification and combinatorial optimization with quantum circuits, as well as using mathematics to understand the advantages and limits of quantum computation.
