About the lab
Takeoka Lab was established in the 2022 academic year. Masahiro Takeoka took up his current position in April 2021 after working at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), a national research institute. Our research in quantum communication, quantum networks, and quantum computing builds on quantum optics and information theory. We collaborate with universities and research institutes in Japan and abroad on work ranging from basic theory and proof-of-principle experiments to research aimed at practical networks.
Students develop their research through discussions within the lab and exchanges with researchers elsewhere, including meetings with collaborators and conferences in Japan and abroad.
Our teams
Our work is currently organized around four research teams, with topics that often overlap. For example, the quantum communication theory and experiment teams may work on the same problem, and quantum network technologies may contribute to distributed quantum computation. We discuss ideas and collaborate across teams as each topic requires.
Faculty and research staff supervise work across teams according to the research topic, rather than being assigned exclusively to one team.
Quantum Communication Theory
We use quantum information theory to study quantum key distribution, quantum repeaters, quantum networks, and quantum sensing.
Quantum Communication Experiment
We use photons and optical fiber to study the generation, transmission, and connection of entanglement, and the technologies needed for practical communication networks.
Quantum Communication Experiment
Distributed Quantum Computation
We study technologies for connecting quantum computers and enabling them to work together, drawing on quantum optics and quantum information theory.
Distributed Quantum Computation
Quantum Machine Learning
We study how quantum circuits can be used for machine learning and optimization, and what can be computed with limited quantum resources.
