Quantum information science

What is quantum information science?

Quantum information science uses principles and phenomena specific to quantum mechanics in information science and technology. It aims to achieve performance and capabilities that conventional technologies have struggled to provide. By using quantum states, entanglement, and other properties absent from classical information, researchers explore new methods of communication, computation, and measurement.

The field brings together physics, information science, mathematics, and engineering. Researchers from these disciplines draw on their expertise to develop new principles and technologies.

Quantum mechanics and information science

Quantum information research applies quantum mechanics to new information technologies and uses ideas from information science to examine quantum physics in new ways. Questions about how to understand entanglement and how accurately information can be transmitted also help us investigate the basic principles of quantum mechanics.

At Takeoka Lab, we work mainly with quantum optics and information theory. Our research ranges from developing new methods for quantum communication, quantum networks, and quantum information processing to exploring the basic principles of quantum information theory.

The scope of our research

Quantum communication and quantum computing are two main areas of our research. We also work on topics that cross the boundaries of communication, computation, and measurement, such as sensing with quantum networks.

Quantum communication

We study how the properties of quantum mechanics can be used to transmit information securely and connect distant quantum systems through networks. Our work covers quantum key distribution, quantum repeaters, and quantum networks, as well as sensing with networked quantum systems.

Quantum computing

We study how quantum systems can process information for applications in computing, machine learning, and optimization. We also work on distributed quantum computation, which connects multiple quantum computers to expand their computing capabilities.

About the lab

We combine basic theory, numerical simulations, and optical experiments according to the research topic. Alongside theoretical work, we collaborate actively with experimental groups in Japan and abroad on research aimed at proof-of-principle experiments and field demonstrations.

See About the lab for our approach to research and how we work.
