The goal of quantum information is to realize performance and new functionality that cannot be achieved by conventional information and communication technologies. It is a research field that actively applies the unique principles and phenomena of quantum mechanics changing traditional information science and information technology. Recently, quantum computers that use the principles of quantum mechanics in computing attracted public attention. However in addition to computing, interesting research is developed in a wide range of fields such as communication and sensing. It is also a field that explores new aspects of quantum physics based on the idea of informatics. It is a boundary area of diverse research fields, and its tools can be successfully applied in various fields to progress both the knowledge and applicable technology.
Using quantum optics and information theory (Shannon theory) as our main tools, we are engaged in research in a wide range of fields, from the development of new methods of quantum communication, quantum networks, and quantum information processing to the exploration of the basic principles of quantum information theory. We start with basic ideas, develop theoretical models, proves of principle, laboratory demonstrations, and field demonstrations in active collaboration with domestic and overseas experimental research groups.
